How to Care for Your Spathiphyllum

What do I do with it now?

So you've just received a new plant and now you need to know how to keep it alive right? Well the spathiphyllum is an easy care plant that can go by many names- spathiphyllum, spath, peace lily, or what we commonly call it in our flower shop, a closet plant. But don't be fooled by the name, you can't really keep it in a closet if you expect it to live.

The spath is a tropical flowering plant in the same family as the antherium. It have long medium green leaves and grows a white bloom. Generally it is grown as a house plant. The spath or closet is know as an air purifier and it helps remove toxic chemicals from the air like formaldehyde.

Caring for your closet

The closet plant likes low-medium light and high water. It's best to water with room temperature water, generally once a week allowing the soil to dry slightly between watering. Lightly misting the leaves at most twice weekly will also be beneficial because the closet likes high humidity. Cold drafts will harm this plant as well as direct sunlight. Remove spent blooms to ensure continued blooms. Black leaves mean over watered. Poor drainage, too frequent water, or standing in water will cause root rot. Re-pot your plant every 2-3 years to ensure a long lifetime with your hardy plant

Ideas for sending a closet plant to your friends

Closets are one of our most popular plants and we can decorate them up any way you can imagine. Armatures (like the one above) and trellises can be made out of bamboo, curly willow, or birch wood (see above). How to care for your Dwarf Schefflera Arbicola

Oh no, my plant is loosing leaves!

Dwarf schefflera arbicolas can go by many names, they like to keep you confused I think. Here at Enchanted Florist we just call them scheffs, our sweet wholesale plant lady Maria calls them arbicolas, but you also might here dwarf scheff, dwarf umbrealla tree, or just umbrella scheff. Or any combination of those!

When you first bring your (we'll say scheff) home, its common for them to go through an acclimation period. Don't panic if your plant starts to drop leaves or thins out, it's perfectly normal!

Most often, like in the picture above, you see the plants as full bushes with thick leaves forming a fingered umbrella shape, or like below with a braided trunk seen often with ficus trees. Scheffs can stretch and grow out of shape so selective pruning if perfectly acceptable.

How to care for a schefflera

Scheffs can adapt to a wide variety of light levels, but they perfer high light if possible, especially if they are of the verigated variety. They have an extensive root system and if outside will often grow toward a water source. Do not let them sit in water, not even in the saucer as this will promote disease.

Scheffs are part of the aralia family and like most in the family, they are prone to spider mites. If kept indoorsm clean plant and leaves often and remember to ckean the under side of the leaves as well where the mites like to hang out.

What type of plant do I send to a friend?

Scheffs and closet plants are both great options when sending a plant to someone who doesn't have the greenest of thumbs. They are easy care, low maintenance plants that should grow well in most houses. Our plants can be decorated to fit any personality or to match any home. Valentine's Day Tips

NOTICE TO ALL GUYS!!!

Valentine's Day is Monday, February 14th, and it's coming soon! This is an important day to many women and here is your opportunity to score brownie points with your sweetie.

This year it is on a Monday and if you forget and try to order that same day, you take a chance on us being sold out of her favorite flower, or not being able to get it there in time. And remember, the most important part of this is that her flowers get to her before any of her coworkers do. And our flowers are generally delivered in the order they are placed.

Start the celebration off early. We suggest you surprise her on Thursday the 10th, or Friday the 11th and include a card message saying that you "Just couldn't wait to say I love you." Instead of wondering if you will remember she will be surprised you thought ahead. And of course her coworkers will be ooohing and aaahhing, impressed at how thoughtful you are.

While beautiful bouquets of red roses are the traditional gift, we have other colors or roses including yellow, purple, white, and many shades of pink. This is the perfect opportunity for you to show off a little if you know her favorite color. In addition to dozen rose bouquets, we have tulips, lilies, gerberas, and stargazes. The Myth About Poinsettias

Busting the Poisonous Poinsettia Myth

Probably the biggest myth that we at Enchanted Florist and other professional florists face is the myth that poinsettias are poisonous. Well rest assured that they are not in the least bit harmful to you, your children, or your family pets. Poinsettias are the most widely tested consumer plant on the market today, proving the myth about the popular holiday plant to be false. Here are some great statistics to ease your mind:

-Scientific research from The Ohio State University has proved the poinsettia to be non-toxic to both humans and pets. All parts of the plant were tested, including the leaves and sap.

-According to POISINDEX, the national information center for poison control centers, a child would have to ingest 500-600 leaves in order to exceed the experimental doses that found no toxicity.

-A study from the Children's Hospital in Pittsburgh and Carnegie Mellon University found that out of 22,793 reported poinsettia exposures there was essentially no toxicity significance of any kind. The study used national data collected by the American Association of Poison Control Centers.

The date marks the death of Joel Roberts Poinsett, who is credited with introducing the native Mexican plant to the United States.
